Melanotan II (MT2)

Melanotan II (MT2) is a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a key component of the melanocortin signaling pathway. Structurally modified to increase its stability and potency, MT2 is primarily studied in research settings for its ability to bind and activate melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R and MC4R.

Activation of MC1R in laboratory models is associated with increased melanin production (melanogenesis), which has made MT2 a research focus in studies involving skin pigmentation and UV protection. Beyond its pigmentation effects, MT2’s interaction with MC3R and MC4R receptors has drawn interest in areas related to energy homeostasis, appetite regulation, and sexual behavior. In preclinical studies, MT2 has been shown to influence feeding behavior, fat metabolism, and sexual arousal pathways, especially through its action on the central nervous system.
