MOTS-C

MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome. In laboratory studies, it has garnered interest for its role as an intracellular signaling messenger: under conditions of metabolic challenge, MOTS-c is able to exit the mitochondria and enter the nucleus, where it engages with transcriptional machinery that governs mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative balance and adaptive gene programs. Its distinctive ability to shuttle between organelles and influence nuclear gene expression makes it a valuable tool for researchers examining inter-organelle communication and cellular stress responses.
